Yokogawa ADMAG AXG vs AXW: Which Magnetic Flowmeter Should You Choose?

Yokogawa ADMAG AXG and AXW are both electromagnetic flowmeters within the ADMAG Total Insight family, but they are designed around different application priorities. AXG is strongly positioned for process industries and demanding liquid measurement, including chemical, slurry, food and beverage, metals and mining applications. AXW is positioned for general industrial process lines and water supply or sewage applications, with sizes extending to very large pipelines. Both use electromagnetic measurement and therefore require a conductive liquid, but the correct choice depends on much more than conductivity: pipe size, liner and electrode requirements, accuracy, solids or adhesion risk, installation environment, diagnostics and lifecycle needs should all be reviewed before a model is selected.

Selection emphasis Process performance, materials, diagnostics and smaller process sizes Large diameter, water/wastewater and general industrial service

The comparison table is a selection starting point rather than a substitute for the General Specification. Some configurations share transmitters, communications and Total Insight functions, while actual pressure limits, conductivity requirements, approvals and available materials depend on size and construction. In particular, conductivity requirements should be checked against the exact AXG or AXW General Specification rather than applying a single family-wide value to every size.

02 / STARTING POINTS

PROCESS INDUSTRIES · 2.5–500 MM

When ADMAG AXG Is the Stronger Starting Point

AXG is the stronger starting point when the application is process-driven rather than primarily a large water-pipeline duty. Yokogawa lists AXG for aggressive industries including oil and gas, chemical, pulp and paper, metals and mining, and water and wastewater. Its sensor sizes begin at 2.5 mm and extend to 500 mm, making the family relevant to small process lines as well as conventional plant piping. Ceramic and PFA lining options support a broad range of process media, while selected AXG configurations provide a high-accuracy option down to ±0.15% of rate.

AXG also has a stronger diagnostic and transmitter feature set in applicable configurations. Yokogawa lists functions such as low-conductivity diagnosis, bubble or flow-noise related diagnostics, electrode adhesion detection, empty-pipe checking and built-in verification within the Total Insight architecture. These functions do not make AXG automatically preferable, but they can add value in processes where measurement health and process conditions need to be monitored more closely. For the detailed commercial product route, see the existing ADMAG AXG product page and the Yokogawa Magnetic Flow Meter Selection Guide.

WATER · SEWAGE · 25–1,800 MM

When ADMAG AXW Is the Stronger Starting Point

AXW is especially relevant when the application is water supply, sewage, drainage or a general industrial water-based process, particularly at larger line sizes. Yokogawa offers AXW from 25 mm up to 1,800 mm, far beyond the AXG maximum size. The family is available with PTFE and several rubber lining options and includes submersible configurations for applicable sizes. This makes AXW a natural candidate for municipal and industrial water networks, treatment facilities, large transfer pipelines and other services where robust large-diameter magnetic measurement is required.

AXW should not be interpreted as a ‘water-only’ meter. It can support general industrial process lines where the medium and materials are suitable. Likewise, AXG can be used in water-related applications. The distinction is therefore one of product positioning and application fit, not a rigid rule that separates the two families by industry.

03 SELECTION FACTORS

What Decides Between AXG and AXW

Send your flow data

Size and Velocity Can Decide the AXG vs AXW Question Early

Line size is often the fastest way to narrow the choice. AXW is the clear family candidate above the AXG 500 mm maximum, while AXG covers much smaller process sizes below the AXW 25 mm minimum. Where both families overlap, the meter should be sized using min/normal/max flow and useful velocity rather than simply matching the nominal pipe diameter. A meter that is too large can operate at unnecessarily low velocity during normal production; an unnecessary reduction in size can increase velocity, abrasion or piping complexity. The sizing exercise should therefore be completed before the final model is chosen.

Liner, Electrodes and Process Conditions Matter More Than Brand Family

Magnetic flowmeters place the liner and electrodes in direct contact with the process, so chemical compatibility and abrasion resistance are central to the selection. AXG uses ceramic or PFA lining families, while AXW uses PTFE and rubber-based linings. The correct choice depends on the actual fluid composition, temperature, solids, coating tendency and plant material standards. Electrode material must be checked in the same way. A lower-cost material that performs well in clean water may be unsuitable for a corrosive chemical service, while a highly specialized material can be unnecessary for a conventional water application.

Do AXG and AXW Measure the Same Fluids?

Both families use electromagnetic measurement, so the fluid must be electrically conductive. Neither is the correct technology for steam, gases or non-conductive hydrocarbon liquids. Both can be considered for compatible slurry or solids-bearing services, but severe abrasion, coating, very high solids or difficult conductivity can change the recommended configuration or even the appropriate Yokogawa magnetic-flow technology. If the process requires direct mass flow or density instead of volumetric flow, ROTAMASS Coriolis may be the better starting point. If the service is steam or gas, Yokogawa vortex flowmeters are more relevant. The published Magnetic vs Coriolis vs Vortex Flow Meter comparison explains these technology-level differences.

Send Your Flow Data for AXG / AXW Selection

If both AXG and AXW appear suitable, send Tomarok the process medium, conductivity if known, pipe size, min/normal/max flow, pressure, temperature, solids or abrasion conditions, material requirements and existing model information. The goal is to select the correct magnetic-flow configuration from the process data rather than choosing AXG or AXW only from the product name. If magnetic measurement itself is still uncertain, start with the Yokogawa Magnetic Flow Meter Selection Guide before moving to the family comparison.
